Indiana Veterans' Home Historic District Deeded to the Trust

Four historic buildings in the Veterans' Home Commandant's House
Historic District, located on North River Road in
West Lafayette, were deeded to the Wabash Valley Trust in February, 2007, by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Indiana Health Department.

To find out more about these historic structures, their importance to our area and to the state, and plans for their future, see the Soldiers' Home Historic District pamphlet (pdf file).

Located on the corner of Main and 6th streets, the Lafayette Theater is enjoying a grand rebirth as one of Lafayette's top venues for movies and live perfoormances. Originally a church and theater, the building was one of the first in Indiana to show moving pictures in the early 1900s. In 1935 most of the building was torn down to build the theater as it stands today. It reopened in 1938 as The Lafayette Theater.

After closing in 1990, the theater stood vacant and
fell into disrepair. In 2002, the current owners, a joint venture of the New York LLC and the Wabash Valley Trust for Historic Preservation, saved the theater from developers who planned to raze the building and turn it into a parking lot.

Major renovations began in the summer of 2003. This included updating the electrical and plumbing, adding a sprinkler system, installing a commercial kitchen, and cosmetic repair to the plaster.
